GHOSTS IN THE ATTIC

The great Delta bluesman Robert Johnson recorded only four sessions in his life - in a hotel room in San Antonio in 1936 and in a disused storage room in a Dallas office block in 1937. He produced just 29 songs but undoubtedly changed popular music forever. In contrast, this album was recorded over endless days and months in my spare room in Sherborne. I’ve now finished 32 original songs but, sadly, so far all I’ve managed to change are a few sets of guitar strings! There are no blues tunes on this album (my third, after 2021’s “Losing Track Of Time” and “It’s Later Than You Think” from 2023) but there is a fair bit of doom and gloom, with a number of songs reflecting anxieties about the perilous state of the world at the moment. The album opens with a couple of songs that were co-written with my great friend Neil Morton, who provided the lyrics to both. When Did The Dark Invade Your Heart is, in Neil’s words, about “a certain world leader, not mentioned by name, but the obvious peg. The lyric is about tyranny and tyrants in general, and the misery their obsession with power and twisted ideology inflict on the innocent and peace-loving.” Fun start, eh? The year 2024 was the year of the election and Middle Way was written by Neil specifically for me to reflect my oft-expressed-over-a-few-beers view that we need a new centre party. The third track, Wasting My Time, is a reworking of an old song (from the late 1970s) that I found in a bag in the loft during lockdown. The rediscovery of this and a number of other songs, co-written with another old friend, Peter Monteith, was the spur for me to start recording all this old stuff and now, a few years later, I have finally managed to record all of them (well, most of them!). B B Bye Bye is another angst-filled song, written by me and Pete in my flat above a chippie in Leeds in 1978. We were not getting anywhere with our band, the Boiler Brothers (B B), and had decided to look for work down south and to try to find a new band, which we did eventually manage, moving to Marlow in 1979 and then joining Legal Tender. In September 1981 my future wife, Jenny, and I went to work in New Orleans as the first stage of a planned round-the-world trip, an adventure cut short by the Falklands War, which broke out just as we were planning on heading down to South America. Back Home is a song I wrote in our apartment at 3222 Prytania Street in the city’s famed Garden District when I was feeling homesick and Down So Low was written in the same vein (and room) - bemoaning the fact that I was feeling the blues when, really, everything in my life was actually brilliant. Many Happy Returns is an even older song (from about 1972) and probably the first I ever wrote. Starting life at 14 Grosvenor Avenue in East Sheen in London - home of Alan Rogerson, drummer in my schoolboy band Matilda - it was purely a short instrumental ditty until one day in Leeds in 1979 Pete and I were writing and, while struggling for ideas, I played it and Pete decided we should write some lyrics for it. It’s another love song about fragile and broken relationships. Carry On Playing is a rare song of ours, in that it has actually been performed live - by Legal Tender in 1981. At the time Pete and I thought we were musical purists and detested heavy metal and this song was intended as a send-up of the genre. Ghost In The Attic, this album’s title- track (another gloomy one), is our attempt at a horror song - we were both huge fans of Stephen King at the time. I decided to call the album this after Neil talked about the “ghosts” I had found in my attic. My response? “You’ll never guess the title of one of the songs I’m going to be doing next”. Keeping the gloomy subject matter going, the next track Somebody Up There Doesn’t Like Us is a song about how the human race has messed up the planet and how imaginary interplanetary policemen (little green men!) might deal with us. Written in Leeds back in about 1978 it was perhaps well ahead of its time, foretelling the eco-concerns of today’s troubled world. The idea for the title came from the excellent 1956 movie “Somebody Up There Likes Me”, starring Paul Newman. The final track, I’m Singing One Of Our Songs, was another written in New Orleans, when I was missing my songwriting sessions with Pete. I tried to name-check some of the tunes we had written, all of which are now immortalised on my albums - none of which would have existed without my musical partnership with Pete. The songs on this album were, like the others, produced using Apple’s Logic Pro app. The vocals are all me and I play all the guitars (except for the solo on “Ghost in the Attic”, which was experimentally adapted from a Logic loop) as well as some of the bass guitar parts. All other instruments were created in Logic Pro. I really wanted Pete to appear in some form on this album so I have taken his vocal from very rough cassette tapes we made in Marlow in 1980 and woven them in to two songs “Wasting My Time” and “Ghost In The Attic”. Finally, if there is anybody out there actually listening, I hope you enjoy. LYRICS
WHEN DID THE DARK INVADE YOUR HEART? We'll never really know you What you think and if you sleep How does it feel to turn A world of hope into grief We don't believe in monsters But the pages of history do This land of drones and bones A hell on earth down to you When did the dark When did the dark When did the dark Invade your heart? Do you hear the cries of the old? Their tears as free as they once were Whatever gods speak to you Dare not betray their despair Tyranny was your destiny Peace an imaginary enemy Dreams ground into dust By a twisted ideology When did the dark When did the dark When did the dark Invade your heart? Every time we turn on the news Long table with a short fuse Every time we turn on the news Long table with a short fuse Blink first and we all will lose When did the dark When did the dark When did the dark Invade your heart? When did the dark When did the dark When did the dark Invade your heart? Words by Neil Morton Music by lan Tasker ©2024
MIDDLE WAY Too many living for the moment Too many living just for today Blind to what tomorrow may bring We need a new anthem to sing Where are the leaders of old? Where are the voices of change? Remember when gravitas was king? We need a new anthem to sing There must be a middle way There must be a middle way Let the silenced have their say There must be a middle way Too much noise, too much hate The age of reason will just have to wait Tolerance is the bell well ring We need a new anthem to sing There must be a middle way There must be a middle way Let the silenced have their say There must be a middle way We go from extreme to extreme Left, right and little in between Forget the two step, forget the swing We need a new anthem to sing There must be a middle way There must be a middle way Let the silenced have their say There must be a middle way There must be a middle way There must be a middle way Let the silenced have their say There must be a middle way Words by Neil Morton. WASTING MY TIME It happened on a summer's day The sun was high in the sky Now I'm wondering when I'm gonna die Things haven't looked so bad before But now you're gone they do Fancy leaving without even saying a goodbye Got to thinking what I would do If I'd wanted to leave I'm sure that I would have let you know How can I forgive the pain That you have caused me? But the way you left tells me I've been wasting my time Wasting my time, wasting my time, Wasting my time with you Wasting my time, I've been wasting my time Gonna find somebody new You've led me up that country road And back again I don't care if I never, ever, ever, ever See you again Wasting my time, I've been wasting my time Gonna find somebody new
B. B. BYE BYE We played on, and on and on But we just didn't get anywhere Money gone on expensive gear We just carried it up and down stairs But no more, it's a chore The turning point is nowhere near Wanna play, every day And we ain't gonna do it here It was hard saying we had to leave But the music called us away Start again with some other friends Be successful come what may Turn around, another sound Playing what we really feel Leave behind, back of mind It's gonna be a whole new deal You'll find us busking on a street corner Money in a hat We've gotta play, we better warn you Not to get in our way when we attack Turn around, another sound Playing what we really feel Wanna play, every day It's gonna be a whole new deal Words & Music by Peter Monteith & Ian Tasker ©2024
BACK HOME Home has never seemed so far away l've been working my way around the world Some things I miss and some things I don't But I can't stay away for too long I'm so glad you're here with me Couldn't do this all on my own Spanish phrase book is on my knee But I can't pick it up to save my life What are you going to do about me? When are you gonna send me home? People I want to see, places I want to be Keep drawing me back home Back home Keep calling me back home Words & Music by Ian Tasker ©2024
DOWN SO LOW Can't help the way my thoughts Disturb me now Wondering if I'm on your mind I don't know what's wrong with me ou've gotta help me, darling please If we're gonna save it we gotta start now I need to know you're gonna try My love for you I cannot hide Together forever, I want to try I've never been down so low When I should have been flying so high Don't want to lose control It's not like me to cry I'm praying for the night That you can be satisfied But in the cold day light Don't know how hard you'll try Words & music by Ian Tasker ©2024
MANY HAPPY RETURNS I wake up, you're by my side Hair splashed across the sheet Your face gentle at rest I'm happy just watching you It's been so long That you'd return l'd never have guessed Now you've come back I'm not lonely now You still can show me how Now life's worth living after all Sunlight filters in The clock says it's time to wake you But I don't want to break the spell You're lying next to me I feel your body stirring My love for you I cannot tell Keep thinking You've left me once before Walked out that selfsame door That you walked through last night to me You're here with me I won't let you go This time I need you so I won't make the same mistake again Words & music by Peter Monteith & Ian Tasker ©2024
CARRY ON PLAYING I like loud music I'm on my way I'm gonna shake my head till I'm sick Heavy metal, play all day I never miss a tricK Meaningless songs, same old riffs Keep the people spending money all right Repetition, bores you stiff But you can carry on playing all night Carry on playing all night Carry on playing all night Keep on head-banging till my brains spill out And my credibility's out of sight Not guitar heroes, they're more like God On the stage, for to worship each night Indoctrinated, take all I'm fed Must admit that I'm not very bright The music is simple, the words unheard Each song sounds exactly the same You don't understand it, think it's absurd You make sure that it's got a bad name Carry on playing all night Because the music to us is all right We'll keep on head-banging Till our brains spill out What's credibility when you can ... GHOST IN THE ATTIC There's a storm outside and it's raining I'm all alone Was that a noise, my ears are straining Did I hear a moan? The house is empty and it's frightening Is there someone there? There's thunder and there's lightning Was that someone on the stair? There's a ghost in the attic My heart is going frantic Help me someone, get me out of here There are noises from the first floor Is it in my head? Did I see something by the back door Was it something dead? The phone is out and I'm stranded I've been here all day What's the chance of someone coming Before I'm carried away? There's rats, I can hear them in the walls As they run about There are pools of blood in the hall Why can't l get out? The doors are jammed and there's no key And the windows are barred It's getting darker and I can't see Something's out there on guard Words and music by Peter Monteith and lan Tasker ©2024
SOMEBODY UP THERE DOESN'T LIKE US Flying high above the green, green land In my little silver spaceship I watch the world Supersonic, dodge the radar screens Put the automatic pilot on hold Dive low over Washington Buzz the White House lawns Make them realise we mean what we say Circle the Kremlin tower Put a call into Peking We can silence you all in just one day If you don't wake up We're gonna blow you out the sky No good waiting for mercy No good asking why We've got an ultimate weapon And we'll use it on you It takes just a few seconds To blast you into the blue We've watched for years While you've messed up your world Got to the stage we can't stand by One more chance to try to get it right Or your world must die We're not a violent race At least not all the time But you're a threat to us all You've got a choice Surrender or we strike You brought about your own fall If you don't wake up We're gonna blow you out the sky No good waiting for mercy No good asking why We've got an ultimate weapon And we'll use it on you It takes just a few seconds To blast you into the blue Words and music by Peter Monteith and lan Tasker ©2024
I'M SINGING ONE OF OUR SONGS I'm singing one of our songs tonight Trying hard to get it right A few lost words and a forgotten chord It'll take me an age To get it the way you want it The way we wrote it tonight Take me away to the place we were before With a case of Colt 45 A night watchman on a desert island, U.S.A. to go We had to take what we could get And what we got, it wasn't much So we just went out and Got ourselves drunk I'm singing one of our songs Words and music by lan Tasker ©2024
