About me

Ian Tasker

I’ve been playing guitar and singing (mostly to myself) since getting my first nylon-strung guitar for Christmas 1969. At school in East Sheen in London I formed a band with friends we called Matilda; at Leeds University I was in another band - the Boiler Brothers; then when I began my career as a journalist, in Marlow in Bucks, it was Legal Tender. During this early period (1977-81) I formed a songwriting partnership with my great friend Peter Monteith. We produced a stream of songs, hardly any of which ever saw the light of day. Between 1981 and 1996 life intervened and I concentrated on my career as a sports journalist at the Independent and later the Guardian in London, periodically trying (and largely failing) to record some old songs on what seems now a very archaic multi-track cassette recorder. Then in 1996, after a 40th birthday reunion with some old school friends, we formed The Layzee Boys and enjoyed a few years of hilarious rehearsals and the occasional (well-received) gig. The music side of my life then went quiet until the lockdown of 2020 when I discovered in the loft a suitcase with a carrier bag stuffed full of scraps of paper featuring the songs Pete and I had written back in the 1970s and 1980s. Looking for a project to pass the time at home during the lockdown I decided to try to revive some of these songs. I had discovered Logic Pro and vowed to record as many of the songs that Pete and I had written and see what emerged. Three albums later - Losing Track Of Time (2021), It’s Later Than You Think (2023) and Ghosts In The Attic (2024) - and I’ve just about exhausted our back catalogue. Inspired by my initial recordings I have also written some new songs with another great friend, Neil Morton - who has written lyrics for three brand new songs and is promising more! I have also managed to write some new ones myself. Click on the links below to see what they sound like. I hope you enjoy. Ian Tasker Sherborne, January 2025
